Marathon runners are now faced with a bigger selection of running aids than ever before. But what do you really need to carry while running?

At first sight, when you’re starting out, all running seems to really require is a good pair of sports shoes. You will soon realise though that there are plenty of other accessories to enhance the marathon experience and make you more comfortable in often adverse conditions. Here is a list of some essential items, as tried and tested by the world’s elite runners.

Hydration belts

There are many choices of hydration belts, but it is important to be comfortable and avoid any model that causes bouncing or chafing.

The RunTasty Hydration Belt avoids these issues, offering firm grip without riding up. It offers storage for a water bottle and electrolytes, with a conveniently located phone pocket.

Nutrition

Runners are also likely to be equipped with energy boosters such as the GU Energy Lab’s range of nutritional gels and energy chews. These should all be tested on practice runs first, to see how they react with your body.

Protection from the elements

Protect yourself against the sun with lip balm such as the EOS 24H Moisture Super Balm. It’s a good idea to squeeze in a pack of facial tissues too.

Portable devices

If you listen to music when running – particularly during an ultramarathon - you’ll know that battery life is finite. As a result, many runners now take portable chargers too.

The Sethruki portable charger has been commended as a compact model with built-in connectivity features meaning it isn’t necessary to take extra cords. Lastly, don’t forget your headphones!
