At another thrilling New York Marathon, the Dutchman Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the respective men's and women's races.

Nageeye sprinted to victory six seconds ahead of 2022 winner Evans Chebet, finishing in 2:07:39. The two had broken away from a six-man group that included last year’s victor Tamarit Tola, who finished fourth behind the Kenyan runner Albert Korir.

There was similar excitement in the women’s race, as Chepkirui held off defending champion Hellen Obiri to win the coveted prize, winning in 2:24:35, some 15 seconds ahead of her compatriot, the defending champion, with another Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot further back in third.

A watching crowd of thousands was out in force along the streets to cheer on approximately 50,000 athletes. The runners navigated what is widely considered to be the toughest major city marathon in the world; the New York Marathon is thought to be a particularly unpredictable race for the frontrunners, a contest of mind and body in which runners need to be ready for rival breakaways at any stage.

A number of Americans finished in the Top 10 with Conner Mantz, Clayton Young and CJ Albertson ending sixth, seventh and tenth respectively. In the women’s race Sarah Vaughn came sixth, Jessica McClain came eighth and Kellyn Taylor finished up in tenth.

Neither New York course record was broken. Tola’s 2:04:58 men’s record and Margaret Okayo’s 2:22:31 women’s record both still stand.
