What does nearly four decades in law enforcement have to do with running?

More than you might think.

In this episode of the Maximum Mileage Running Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Ann Burke, certified running coach, law enforcement leader, and founder of the Delray Beach Running Company. With more than 80 marathons completed and a current goal of running a sub three-hour marathon at age 59, Ann brings discipline, clarity, and high standards to everything she does.

This conversation is about more than miles. It is about leadership, safety, durability, and protecting the athlete.

And that is exactly what we stand for at Maximum Mileage.

Building a Running Store from the Ground Up

The Delray Beach Running Company was not built on shortcuts.

It was built on early mornings, ice-cold hydration stations on A1A before sunrise, relentless community engagement, and long days developing vendor relationships. For years, Ann showed up every Saturday to support local runners, not because it was convenient, but because it was necessary to build trust.

Her philosophy was simple. Put the runner first.

That meant refusing brand incentives when they conflicted with what was best for the athlete. It meant conducting real gait analysis using state-of-the-art software, including barefoot testing. It meant educating customers instead of pushing product.

The goal was never just to sell shoes. It was to protect runners from preventable mistakes.

Proper Gait Analysis Is Not Optional

One of the strongest messages from this episode is that not all shoe fittings are equal.

A quick glance at your feet while you stand in a shoe is not a gait analysis. Ann built her store around understanding biomechanics and helping runners find the right shoe for their body, not the trendiest model on the wall.

When we talk about natural running, we are not talking about minimalism. We are talking about allowing your body to move as naturally as possible with the least unnecessary interference.

If you are dealing with recurring issues like IT band pain or lower back discomfort, something as simple as adjusting shoe offset can make a meaningful difference. But that requires knowledge and intention.

Raising the Standard on Runner Safety

Ann’s law enforcement background shaped how she built community.

Group runs included route reviews and post-run debriefs. A buddy system was encouraged at all times. No one was left behind. She would personally drive along routes to check on runners and offer rides back if needed.

We also discussed personal safety, especially for women. Her advice is direct:

  • Always carry a phone
  • Let someone know your route
  • Run against traffic
  • Stay aware of your surroundings
  • Avoid isolating yourself with headphones

Preparedness is not overreacting. It is responsibility.

Fueling Is Not Optional

This is an area where I feel especially aligned with Ann.

She strongly cautions against calorie restriction and depletion runs, particularly for women. Restricting food intake in pursuit of weight loss can lead to stress fractures, hormonal disruption, and long-term damage.

Her approach is performance-based fueling.

She prioritizes carbohydrates, maintains electrolyte balance, and avoids running in a depleted state. If you feel hungry during a run, it is already too late.

At Maximum Mileage, I coach busy athletes who are already managing high life stress. Undereating only compounds the problem. If you want durability and consistent progress, fueling properly is foundational.

Shoes, Inserts, and Industry Upsells

We also had an honest conversation about something many runners experience but rarely question.

Upselling.

Some stores push inserts with every shoe purchase, significantly increasing the cost without clear medical necessity. While custom orthotics prescribed by a physician absolutely have their place, unnecessary inserts can weaken intrinsic foot musculature over time.

Runners deserve education, not pressure.

Metrics Are Tools, Not Authority

Ann uses heart rate data, ground contact time, and balance metrics to monitor performance and catch biomechanical issues early. I appreciate her approach because it mirrors my own.

Data is helpful. It is not the authority.

Technology can inform your training, but it cannot replace experience, context, and professional judgment.

Why Human Coaching Still Matters

In a world full of artificial intelligence and generic training plans, Ann’s stance is clear.

If you want to truly transform your running, work with a knowledgeable human coach.

AI can provide information. It cannot adjust your plan when your work week explodes. It cannot sense when you are on the edge of burnout or injury. It cannot factor in your history, your stress load, and your unique biomechanics the way a coach can.

At Maximum Mileage, my mission is to help busy athletes build durable fitness through schedule-first, education-forward coaching. That means I look at your real life. Your time constraints. Your recovery capacity. Your previous setbacks.

Because sustainable progress is never one-size-fits-all.

The Bigger Takeaway

This episode is about raising the standard.

In shoe fitting.
In safety.
In fueling.
In coaching.
In leadership.

Ann’s career, both in law enforcement and in running, reflects a commitment to protecting people and holding firm boundaries around what matters.

If you are a comeback runner, a busy professional, or someone rebuilding confidence after injury, I hope this conversation reminds you that durability is built intentionally.

And the right guidance makes all the difference.

Ready to Train Smarter?

If this conversation resonated with you and you are ready to raise your own standard in training, you do not have to figure it out alone.

At Maximum Mileage, I work with busy athletes who want structure, durability, and confidence in their training. If you are tired of second-guessing your plan, battling recurring injuries, or trying to piece together advice from the internet, it may be time for a smarter approach.
